Wide Bay Zone Financial Literacy Workshop - 08/07/17
Clubs Queensland invites you to join in this one-day workshop specifically tailored to directors, committee members and senior management of clubs. The workshop will go through a simple step-by-step methodology on how to read, analyse and interpret the three main financial statements and explain how they interrelate. Available only to member clubs of Clubs Qld. Capped at 2 per club.
ARE YOU FINANCIALLY LITERATE?
Financial literacy is a key skill for all directors and committee members and is essential to fulfilling your legal and fiduciary duties and responsibilities to the club/s you govern. As a director you are responsible for reviewing, analysing and interpreting the management accounts presented at board meetings and asking appropriate questions with the view to making decisions as to how to improve the club's financial performance and position. Furthermore, director’s/committee members are also responsible for signing off the year-end financial statements of the club, which must be prepared in accordance with the AASB Accounting Standards so as to give a ‘true and fair’ view.
Clubs Queensland invites you personally to join in this one-day workshop specifically tailored to directors, committee members and senior management of clubs with a view to explaining the three financial statements and how they interrelate. Most importantly, using a 'real' set of financial statements of a Queensland club, this workshop will go through a simple step-by-step methodology on how to read, analyse and interpret each of the three financial statements. The workshop concludes with an overview of financial statement analysis, including calculating and interpreting key financial ratios used in clubs. Participants will work (in groups) through two sets of financial statements of real clubs, which will form the basis for several activities throughout the day.
The workshop will be facilitated by
, a lecturer in the School of Accountancy at the Queensland University of Technology. Doug Flockhart attended a Corporate Governance Course run by Stephen at the Australian Institution of Company Directors and found that not only did he explain financial literacy in an easy to understand language, he also made it interesting and left you with a desire to learn more. Stephen is used to teaching youth through to company directors and has a natural ability to navigate and explain in simple terms what is to most of us, a difficult terrain. We trialed this course in October 2016 and received fantastic positive feedback with a common theme that more of the same should be made available to clubs - these are some of the comments from attendees:
Bruce Cocks, Secretary of Holland Park Sports & Community Club
The workshop was excellent. I work with figures everyday and Stephen made it very interesting, he is to be congratulated for making a “boring” subject come alive.
Michelle Harrison, Accounts Manager of Oakey RSL
Both Melissa and myself would like to thank Clubs QLD for putting on the Financial Literacy course, we both got a lot out of the day. We believe that this is a course that should definitely be run again.
Len Bebbington, President of RSL Services & Citizens Club Nambour
I found it excellent! It filled in a couple of gaps in my knowledge of the financial side of things.
David McBey, President of Middle Green Sports Inc.
Found today very interesting and is something that all clubs and committees should be trained in.
