Productivity Commission's Inquiry into Gambling Industries 2009

The Productivity Commission released its first report on Australia's Gambling Industries in 1999.

The 1999 report led to significant reforms of the gambling sector across Australia, resulting in a strong focus on problem gambling and harm minimisation.

In July last year, the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) asked the Productivity Commission to update the 1999 report so that it reflects the current gambling environment, thus enabling each jurisdiction to better understand and respond to changes that have taken place over the last decade.

The following timeframe has been set for the latest report:
- Initial Submission Due - 31 March 2009
- Draft Report - July/August 2009
- Submission on Draft Report Due - September 2009
- Final Report - 26 February 2010 to be handed to the Government

To assist in the initial submission, the Productivity Commission released a Discussion Paper in December 2008, outlining a range of issues on which it wanted feedback from relevant stakeholders.

Clubs Australia and Clubs Queensland have made comprehensive submissions that strongly advocate the importance and benefits of community-owned gaming. Clubs Australia's submission has a national focus while our submission focuses on the Queensland context which is very different from other Australian jurisdictions. In addition, a number of clubs have written directly to the Productivity Commission.
